Katherine Ann Abbey, 72, a native of Paso Robles, was born in April 1941, and passed away Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at Paradise Valley Care in Atascadero after a short battle with cancer. She graduated in 1959 from Paso Robles High School (PRHS), the third generation of her family to do so. She earned her BS degree in nursing from San Jose State University and worked at various hospitals around the state. She served her country as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War, while stationed at San Diego. After her Naval service, she earned her MA degree from San Diego State University and taught at Modesto Junior College. She then worked until retirement at Atascadero State Hospital teaching in the Psychiatric Technician Program. Katherine always enjoyed visiting, especially with her son, friends and PRHS classmates who gathered around her during these last months. They were a great blessing to her. She was also thankful for the fellowship of her fellow members of the Mennonite Church. She had a small goat farm and a dog that brought her much joy. With a great sense of humor, she was a good story teller and a gifted teacher. Her faith had always carried her through - she will be missed. Katherine is survived by her son, Jacob Abbey; mother, Marguerite Abbey; brother, Neil Abbey; and sister-in-law, Janet Abbey, all of Paso Robles. She is also survived by her aunt, Doris Greenelsh of Santa Maria; nephew, Shawn Abbey of Salem, Ore.; and niece, Kristine Robbins of Alexandria, Va.
