Solomon Bruce Welton Kitchen (aka Solomon E. Bruce, Solomon Bruce Wilton Kitchen) was born 9 September 1841 in Petersburg, Hardy, VA. The son of Wyatt Chamberlin Kitchen and Elizabeth Ann Cloggett. Solomon died 23 March 1914 in Clearwater, Pinellas, FL and was buried about March 25 in Clearwater. The cause of his death is listed as Epilepsy. He married (1) Sarah HARTFORD . (They may not have married). He married (2) Nancy GARRETT 4 September 1868 in Marshalltown, Marshall, IA.
Solomon enlisted in the U. S. Army Nebraska Volunteers Co. A. Regiment 1st, Rank of Private, at Plattsmouth, NE at age 20 as Solomon B. Kitchen and was mustered in at Omaha, NE. He was first in the infantry (in 1861) then reenlisted (6 Nov 1863) in the cavalry when the 1st Nebraska Infantry was changed to cavalry, and he served as a blacksmith. He served at Fort McHenry, Corinth, Helena, Batesville, Pilot Knob and many other places during the Civil War before being mustered out 1 Jul 1866 in Omaha, NE.
Solomon Bruce Welton Kitchen entered the service under the name Kitchen, but later dropped the last two of his names. After the Civil War, Solomon came to Marshalltown, IA, probably following the railroad for work. He held occupations as farmer, blacksmith, quarry laborer, railroad laborer and cemetery sexton. He met Nancy Garrett, married her and fathered children under the name of Bruce.
