Rugby international. He was a New Zealand rugby rep (All Black) in 1932 and 1934 to 1937, playing 38 matches including 9 Tests. He was the top try scorer on tours to Australia in 1932, and to the United Kingdom in 1935/6. In the Test against Scotland on that tour he scored 3 tries. At school he was an all-round sports star, and later in life he was a captain of industry, being the Managing Director of Smith & Caughey. He received several awards for his contributions in business and the community.
