Elizabeth was the daughter of John Absher and Catharine Miller Heiman. John was a Union Army veteran who had returned home from the Civil War. He was living at a boarding house and became romantically involved with the wife of the house-owner, Catherine. She became pregnant with Elizabeth and when her husband, Jacob, returned home he did not want her. After a protracted legal battle John was granted custody of Elizabeth. A few years later (1871) John married Amelia Eschmann. In 1885 the three of them moved to Metropolis, Illinois. Elizabeth met John Helmantoler and they were married 05 Nov 1891. They had eight children: Fred, Pearl, Levi, Lydia, Florence, Delia, Aline and Allie. Lizzie died in 1946 at the age of 80.
