Sudden Death of S.M. Ballard
On 55th Wedding Anniversary

Seymour Morton Ballard, 78, former Cortland postmaster and business man and for many years secretary of the New York Life Insurance company, died suddenly Monday night at his residence, 4 Hill street. His death occurred soon after Mr. and Mrs. Ballard had returned to their home after attending a dinner in honor of their 55th wedding anniversary.

Mr. Ballard was born in Cortland, Oct. 25, 1851, the son of Horatio and Sarah Fairchild Ballard. Mr. Ballard's career in the insurance business began with his appointment as clerk in the New York state insurance department in 1873. He was an examiner for the department eleven years. Retiring on account of his health, he engaged in the furniture business in Cortland as one of the firm of Edgecomb & Ballard, and served one term as postmaster.

He went to the New York Life Insurance company as supervising cashier when he had regained his health and in 1894 was made assistant comptroller. He became comptroller in 1903 and a year later was elected secretary. He retired a year ago and he and Mrs. Ballard returned to Cortland.

Besides his wife, Mrs. Cora P. Ballard, he leaves two nieces, Mrs. Arthur T. Dunn and Mrs. Max H. Higgins of Cortland.

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at the residence, 4 Hill street. Burial was in Cortland Rural cemetery.
