Florence ("Berdie") was the first child of William McDonald and Emma Steele. On 11 Jun 1898 in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tn., she married Robert Thomas Shannon, who was born on 5 May 1860 in Perry Co., Tn., a son of Joseph J. Shannon (b. 1830, Tn.12) and Nancy Young (b. 1844, Tn.12). Florence and Robert lived in Nashville, Tn., where they were members of the Congregational Church, and where Robert was an attorney. Robert had one daughter—Nancy Bell—from a previous marriage to Nancy Ann "Nannie" Bell, who was born on 14 Mar 1858 in Dickson Co., Tn., a daughter of William Blackburn Bell (b. 25 Dec 1818, Va.; d. 12 Apr 1876, Tn.) and Emmaline Coldwell (b. 25 Mar 1825, Tn.; d. 25 Dec 1886, Tn.). Nannie was a music teacher. She died on 24 Nov 1891, four days after the birth of her daughter.

Florence and Robert had one daughter and one son—Emma E. and William McDonald. Florence died of a coronary thrombosis and pneumonia.
