The son of Samuel & Mary "Polly" (Unger or Auger) Wallower, in 1860 he was living with his well-to-do merchant family in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.


A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:

  1. Enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Harrisburg June 24, 1863, mustered into federal service there June 28 as a private with Co. F in the six-month organization of the 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his company January 6, 1864.
  2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Harrisburg August 22, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 23 as a private with Co. C, 201st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 23, 1865.


He married Sarah Josephine Sharp ca. 1867 and fathered Charles Samuel (b. 06/08/72). John died at his son's home as the "result of apoplexy" with "arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor.
