Barnabas' parents are James and Hannah (Barlow) Hammond. Barnabas was a rigger, a sail maker and a ship owner.

He is the direct descendant of Mayflower Pilgrims Francis Cooke and Richard Warren.

Even though his age is appropriate to have served in the Revolutionary War - the family cannot find any proof of that happening - only his brother Gideon is documented as fighting around 1776.

This is a book (excluding the Silver Mayflower books) that Barnabas' family lines are documented in:

- A history and genealogy of the descendants of William Hammond of London, England by Dr. Roland Hammond, MD
