Esther "Mickie" L. McKahan, 89, of Coeur d'Alene, passed away February 26, 2014, at Coeur d'Alene Homes where she resided for the past three years.
-Mickie was born in Wallace, ID on Sept. 12, 1924, to Harry and Ella Trekell. She moved to Coeur d'Alene at a very early age and graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School in 1942. She was in the USO at Farragut during the war years. Mickie attended the University of Idaho and was a member of the Pi Phi Sorority house, where she met Jim McKahan. They were married December 28, 1946, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Coeur d'Alene.
-They started their new life together after Jim graduated from the U of I at Mullan Park, which is now McEuen Field. During this time, Mickie worked as an office manager for AAA at the Desert Hotel. In 1950, Mickie and Jim built a home on the Fort Grounds where they raised two sons, Scott and Randy. Later, they built a retirement home in 1974 on Fernan Lake.
-Mickie was a charter member of the Kootenai Medical Auxiliary for over thirty years. She sang many years in the church choir at St. Luke's and Coeur d'Alene Bible Church. Mickie and Jim played in a bridge club for over 50 years. After Jim's retirement in 1979, they enjoyed traveling all over the country in their motor home.
-Mickie and Jim were married nearly 65 years before Jim passed away in 2012. Mickie is survived by her two sons: Scott (Teresa), and Randy (Ruth Anne); grandchildren: Jamie, Shawn, Lindsey and Chris; and two great grandchildren.
-Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, March 3, with viewing from 10-11 a.m., at Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel. Burial will be held later at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d'Alene. Yates Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of final arrangements.
