Dale E. Allen, 89, of New London, died Thursday, February 27, 2014 at the New London Nursing and Rehab Center.
Mr. Allen was born October 16, 1924 in Des Moines County, the son of John Wasson and Pearl Marie Hale Allen. On April 6, 1947 he married Blanche Garrels in Mt. Pleasant. She died March 24, 2012. He was a 1943 graduate of New London High School and enlisted in the Navy in 1944 during World War II. Mr. Allen was a lifelong farmer. He was of the Christian faith.
He enjoyed horses and good horse racing, horseshoe pitching, bowling, and watching Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball, playing pitch and pinochle. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing in Canada and being outdoors.
Mr. Allen is survived by two sons, Chuck Allen of Danville, and James (Patricia) Allen of New London; two daughters, Dalene (Steve) Pickle and Connie Housman both of New London; eleven grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Ione Sater, and one brother Clair Allen.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Elliott Chapel, New London. Pastor Dean Graber will officiate. Military Rites will be presented by the Henry County Honor Guard. According to his wishes, Mr. Allen has been cremated and inurnment will be held at a later date. Visitation will begin after noon on Monday, March 3 with the family greeting friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorials have been established to the New London Veteran Memorial Park and the New London Fire and Rescue.
