Death of a Well-Known Colored Citizen
Charles Syphax died at his residence at 1435 Pierce Street yesterday. Mr. Syphax was born at Arlington, Va., Oct 15, 1829. He was a first class clerk in the U.S. pension office. He has been an ardent worked for the best interests of the colored race, and his manly course during life made him many friends among white and colored people.

Funeral of Charles Syphax
The funeral of Charles Syphax took place Monday afternoon from his late residence, No 1545 Pierce Street, and was well attended by a large number of friends. The floral offerings were very profuse and handsome.

Mr. Syphax was employed in the Pension Office for thirty one years, being appointed in Pierce's administration by Secretary McClelland. During that time he was held in the greatest respect by the officials, who bestowed upon him many marks of favor.

Rev. F. J. Grimke conducted the funeral service and was assisted by Revs. Messrs. Middleton and Brodie.
