Lucille was born in the spring of 1925 in Huntington, Arkansas to Andrew W. and Emma Pennington Copeland. She was the second of six children born to their union. Lucille spent her childhood years growing up in Huntington. As a young woman, Lucille moved to Florida to live with her sister, Viola and husband during WWII to work in a factory. She met her soon to be husband, Wendell Summers, during those years. They were married on December 4, 1945 in Huntington after Wendell's discharge from the Army. Wendell and Lucille lived in Poteau, Oklahoma where their son, Don, was born in 1946. They lived in Poteau from December 1945 until March 3, 1948 and then in Richmond, CA until March 1, 1949 when they moved to Avenal. In 1950 their daughter, Cheryl, was born at the hospital in Coalinga (a neighboring town). In May of 1952 Wendell, Lucille and the kids moved back to Poteau, Oklahoma and lived there until February of 1953. It was then that they moved back to California and to Taft and settled there permanently. Wendell went to work for Standard Oil Company and Lucille worked hard to make a home for her husband and children and babysat for extra money. Once her children were older Lucille went to work for the West Side Hospital in Taft as a housekeeper until her retirement in 1978. Lucille was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family. She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ most of her life, being baptized into Christ in 1951 by Roy E. Gully in Avenal. Lucille was preceded in death by an infant brother, Meryl Copeland in 1933; her father in 1979; her mother in 1981; her great-granddaughter, Miranda Summers in 1999; her sister, Roberta Chatterton in 2000; her brother, Leonard Grayson in 2002; her sister, Viola Buxtun in 2007; and by her brother, James Copeland in 2008. Of her childhood family she is survived only by her sister, Mildred Rowles. Lucille is survived by her husband of 64 years, Wendell Summers, their son, Don and his wife, Donna Summers; her daughter, Cheryl and her husband, Steve Sommers.
