Harrison Tilbury grew up on a family farm in St. Joseph Township, Allen County, IN which is northeast of Ft. Wayne. Toward the end of the Civil War Harrison enlisted in the Union Army at Wabash, IN, Feb. 23, 1865 as a Private and served in Company I, 153rd Regiment, Indiana Infantry until mustered out at Louisville, KY, June 9, 1865. He returned to Allen County, to farm, and raised 6 sons and 3 daughters with his wife, Lavina, nee Skinner. On April 16, 1880, he applied for an invalid pension which was approved and issued as Certificate #343557. Lavina passed away Dec. 27, 1880. The 1883 Ft. Wayne City Directory listed him as working as a carpenter. He spent the period from Mar. 8, 1889 through Jan. 25, 1890 at the Central Branch National Military Home at Dayton, Ohio due to an injury to his right hip. The 1910 U.S. Census for West Jordan, Salt Lake County, Utah listed him as head of household, apparently retired. Also in the household with a son, George Washington Tilbury, and his family.

Harrison died from arteriosclerosis at St. Clair Hospital, in Cleveland, Ohio, April 6, 1911.

He may have been visiting another son, John Tilbury, who signed Harrison's death certificate an the informant and who who resided at 1079 East 78th Street, a structure which is still standing but boarded up and unoccupied. He was buried in the Grand Army of the Republic lot at Woodland Cemetery which was established by Army-Navy Post #187, Department of Ohio, on May 4, 1909. It is unknown why John settled in Cleveland but he does not appear in either the 1910 or any other U.S. Census.
