Salvatore 'Sam' Caruso Jr, was the son of Salvatore Caruso (1868-1894) and Nancy Virgets (1873-1941), who was born Nunziata Verdichezzi on the island of Ustica in the Province of Palermo, Sicily. She came to America circa 1884 with her parents, Joseph [Verdichezzi] Virgets (1846-1925) and Marie Bazlie [Verdichezzi] Virgets (1833-pre-1925).

Nancy married Salvatore Caruso (1868-1894) or Corso who died January 25, 1894. Their only child, Salvatore 'Sam' Caruso Jr. (1894-1970) m. Josephine Blank, was born at New Orleans on February 22, 1894.[1900 Orleans Parish, Louisiana Federal Census R 572, p. B-3, ED 48]

On February 14, 1901, Nancy [Verdichezzi] Virgets married Salvatore [Samuel] Abate (1870-1941) in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. They were the parents of four children: Sarah Abate (1901-1979) m. Edward A. Blank (1904-1968); Philip Louis Abate (1903-1959) m. Raphaella Basile (1905-1981); Marie Abate (1907-1999) m. Lawrence J. Lansing (1903-1959); and Charles Joseph Abate (1910-1944) m. Lena Bevinetto (1906-1951).
