Brevet Captain William H. Justin enlisted as a Private in Battery H, (DeGoylers Black Horse Battery) 1st Michigan Light Artillary. Promoted to 1st. Sgt. at Battle of 10 Mile Island, Battlefield Commission as 2nd. Lt at Vicksburg, Promoted to Senior 1st. Lt. at Atlanta and assumed Command of the Battery in the final months of the Civil War during Shermans March to the Sea. Four (4) brothers and (7) cousins also served with the Captain (See Bowman Cemetery & St. Mary's Cemetery, Yankee Road, St. Clair, Michigan). Twice wounded and had several horses shot out from under him in battle.
