The news of the death of Mrs. Pauline R. Otis spread through the city yesterday. She died at 3:45 A. M. It had been generally known that she had been sick about a week with congestive fever, and that at dusk the night before she was supposed to be dying. She was conscious to the last but talked but little during the night. During the evening before she passed away she expressed her last wishes to her family and afterwards said but little. The last name upon her lips was "Lydia," her younger daughter and the only unmarried child living.
Mrs. Otis was the widow of Harris F. Otis, who came to Topeka, we believe, in 1860, and who was killed by a fall in the old Ritchie block (now Rowley's corner) sometime in the spring of 1861. He was at the time of his death, Mayor of Topeka.
Mrs. Otis was the stepmother of John G. Otis, and the mother of Mrs. Guilford Dudley and Mrs. T. H. Walker.
She was one of the old landmarks of Topeka, known and honored by all the old settlers. She was born at Danbur ,Vt., July 9, 1822, and was married February 22, 1843.
The funeral will be from Grace Church, at 3 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. J. N. Lee, of Leavenworth, formerly of this city, officiating. The friends of the family are invited to attend without further notice.
