Joseph served a term in the Irish Army, and upon compelting his commission he went to America. There he married Winnie Moran, he died in Skerries on a return visit.

Erected by Mrs. Catherine Boylan. of Skerries In memory of her beloved husband James Boylan who departed this life October 28th 1872 aged 63 years. Also of her two infant children. And of her son Henry Boylan who died Nov 28th 1889 aged 44 yrs. The above Catherine Boylan died Sept 15th 1893 aged 81 years. And of Joseph Boylan who died 6th July 1916 aged 66 years and his two infant sons Ann Boylan wife of above Joseph Boylan died July 22nd 1933 aged 74 years their son Joseph W. Boylan late New York, died July 7th 1959 aged 63 yrs. Their daughter Jane Mary died Aug 24th 1975 aged 77 yrs And their son Thomas Died Feb 15th 1978. Moira Hill nee Boylan Died January 2nd 1986 And her husband George Died April 5th 1964 Both buried in Kenure.
