Sister M. Sylvianne Mattern, OSF, age 94, died on Friday, January 21, 2011 at Provena Sacred Heart Home after a short illness.
She was born on July 6, 1916 in Henry, Illinois and was the daughter of the late Edward B. and Anna (Troendly) Mattern. She has lived in Avilla csince April 2010, coming from St. Francis Cenvent in Frankfort, Illinois.
She was a Fransiscan Sister of the Sacred Heart for 66 years.
Sister Sylvianne began her ministry in 1944 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville, Illinois, where she served 12 years in the business office. She then served six years at St. Joseph Hospital in San Fransisco and 24 years at St. Francis Hospital in Santa Barbara. She leaves a legacy of building/renovation projects, fundraising successes and St. Francis Foundation work. She retired in 1989 to the Motherhouse and in 2010 to Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Provena Sacred Heart Home Chapel in Avilla.
Visitation will be on Monday from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at Provena Sacred Heart Home Chapel. A rosary service will be recited at 6:30 that evening.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to the Fransiscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart, 9201 W. St. Francis Road, Frankfort, Illinois 60423-8335.
