Mr. Charles H. Abels, Jr., age 89. "Charlie" as he was known to his many friends and family passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Maplewood Nursing Home following a short illness.

He was born in Rochester, NY, son of the late Charles Henry and Barbara Fischer Abels and was the retired Safety Director for J. Hungerford Smith Company and Hunt Wesson Foods in Humboldt, TN. Mr. Abels was an avid bicyclist and was recognized with many awards for his skill in this sport and was a member of the Tip Top Tappers dance group. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a veteran of World War II serving as personal secretary for General Douglas McArthur.

Survivors include one sister of Rochester, NY; three nephews, two nieces, several great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur C. Abels; and two nephews.

A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m., Friday March 7, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Monsignor Thomas Kirk officiating with burial to follow in Ridgecrest Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the church beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday. Knights of Columbus will serve as Pallbearers.
