Mansel Allen Slack, age 91 of DePere and Kewaunee was born to eternal life on Thursday, May 14, 2009. He was born on October 18, 1917 in Platteville, WI to the late George and Mary Etta (Newton) Slack. Mansel graduated Platteville High School in 1935 and Platteville State Teachers College in 1939. He married Norma Leah Wilkinson in Baton Rouge, LA on December 29, 1941. Mansel enlisted in the Army in 1940 and served five years during World War II with service in Europe. He continued his 20 years of service to this country in the Army Reserves achieving the rank of Major. Mansel moved to Kewaunee in 1946 and taught Industrial Arts at the high school until his retirement in 1980. He and Norma moved to Allouez in 1972 and later on to DePere. They had a second retirement home in Mesa, Arizona which was enjoyed for many years. Mansel was a 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge, the American Legion Post 29 of Kewaunee and the V.F.W. Post 2037 of Green Bay. He was also a long-time member of the Community Congregational Church in Kewaunee and served many years as caretaker. He had a passion for boating, flying his private plane and rode motorcycles most of his life. Mansel was preceded in death by his wife Norma in March of 2003, after 61 years of marriage and by two infant daughters, Mary and Marie. He was the youngest of nine and all have preceded him in death along with his parents Marietta and George Slack Sr. He had four brothers, Laverne, Albert, George Jr. and Virgil, and four sisters, Lottie, Nellie, Lucille and Evelyn. He is survived by two sons and their wives, two daughters and their husbands, 9 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral services held Monday at Community Congregational Church with Rev. Randy Kohls officiating. Burial with full military rites in Riverview Cemetery.
