Elizabeth came to America in 1835 with her family. In 1850 she married John H. Carpenter. He left a few months later for the California gold rush. In 1852 she came to California with her sister and brother-in-law and their children. They came by ship around the horn. When they arrived in Sonora the men had taken the day off of work to watch the women come into town. They were the first two white women to come to Sonora. They lived in Springfield, CA. There they buried two of their children in Springfield Cemetery. In 1857 John and Elizabeth moved to Modesto and settled on the river to raise their family. Carpenter Road is named after her husband.
