Colonel Roney retired from the U.S. Army with 30 years distinguished service. He served numerous State-Side and overseas tours, and was a Vietnam veteran. After retiring from the Army he worked with the Department of Defense as a civilian for 10 years.
Colonel Roney loved his church and church family. He loved his dogs and cats, and enjoyed bird watching, nature and people. He also loved to travel and was an avid biker and runner.
Preceding Colonel Roney in death was his first wife, Susie Anna Miller Roney in 2004. He was a member of Revival Baptist Church.
Survivors include his loving, wife Mary Roney of Blairsville, GA; one son and daughter in law, Ken and Lin Roney, Jr. of Watertown, NY; two daughters and one son in law, Carol Roney of Millersville, MD and Kim and Bill Smith of Johnstown, PA; step-children, Karen Godfrey of Warne, NC and Gary and Sandra Wilson of Brasstown, NC; brother, Lou and Linda Roney of Greensburg, PA; sisters, Janet Patricia and Harry Speedy of Greensburg, PA and Vicki and Mark Hahn of Issaquah, Washington; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren, five step grandchildren and eight step-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 9, 2014 at Revival Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Seay and Rev. Tim Dickey officiating. Music will be by Wayne Morgan, Heather Henderson and Carol Renshaw. Pallbearers will be Gary Wilson, Bill Brinkworth, Roy Phillips, David Hemphill, Bill Smith, DeWayne Roney and Randy Thomas. Interment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted but if you wish in lieu of flowers make memorial contributions to Relay for Life.
