Husband of Bertha Mae Dollar (1901-1958). They were married on 15 Oct 1919 in Grady County, Georgia.

He was the oldest son of John Mitchell Benefield (Benningfield)(1861-_____) and Emma Mae Griner (1868-1903), and a grandson of James J Benefield (1838–1864) and Olive E Blount (1841-____). His grandfather was a Private in the Confederate States Army in Company B, 10th Georgia Infantry Battalion. Enlisted 4 Mar 1862; killed in action at Battle of Petersburg, Virginia on 22 Jun 1864.

He served as a Private in the U.S. Army in World War I in Company G, 166th Infantry, 42nd Division. He enlisted on 26 Jun 1918 in Cairo, Georgia, and was discharged on 15 May 1919 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. While living at Enterprise, Alabama, he was admitted to the U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Johnson City, Tennessee for treatment of TB from 23 May 1932 to 7 Jun 1932.
