Sr. Virginia entered the Sisters of St. Joseph after being a member of the Congregation of the Holy Ghost. Her name there was Sister Mary Agnes. Mother Alexine, the major superior of the Sisters of St. Joseph, obtained permission from the archbishop for her to enter the new community on June 24, 1913. She made her first (temporary) vows on January 6, 1916 and her final vows on July 2, 1920.

The following was taken from her record in our archives:
"Sr. Virginia was a good religious and a remarkable teacher. During the summer of 1927 she attended DePaul University until she was finally obliged by extreme suffering to take to her bed. from which she never rose, a few days before school closed. Her one ambition, to receive her University Degree, was unfulfilled, as she lacked one credit to receive the Ph.B. degree when she died."

"Sr. Virginia so endeared herself, by her motherly ways, to the children she taught, that even when they had reached man's estate they had the highest regard and respect for her, and still perpetuate her memory."

"Sister Virginia's was the first funeral Mass held in the chapel of the new motherhouse. She was buried December 31, 1927 during Christmas week in Mt.Carmel cemetery."

"Sister Mary Virginia Hagarty Dies After Long Illness"

Sr. Mary Virginia Hagarty died December 28, 1927 at her home at Nazareth Academy, LaGrange, IL. after a lingering illness of several months duration.
Sister Mary Virginia Hagarty was formerly Miss Gertrude Hagarty, daughter of Mr & Mrs. Lawrence (Anna-Doyle)Hagarty, now deceased, and she spent her early years in the vicinity, at her home south of town. Later, she became a member of the Community of the Sisters of St. Joseph, where she was occupied for a number of years in the high school work and she was especially adapted to that position, having a charming personality and exceeding patience. She was an untiring worker, accomplishing much good, and he death is greatly felt by the members of her community. She leaves to mourn her loss the following brothers and sisters:
P.J. (Patrick Joseph) Hagarty,of Fullerton Nebraska; Lon Hagarty of Greene; Mrs. (Agatha)Earl Bailey, of Gaithersburg, MD; Mrs. Bessie Nevins, of Greene=the later having spent the past few weeks at LaGrange with her sister.
