Colonel Leroy Vance Corbett, USMC (Ret.) February 22, 1922 – February 16, 2014

Colonel Leroy Vance Corbett, USMC (Retired), passed into eternity on February 16, 2014 at the Oaks of Mayview, Raleigh, North Carolina.

He was born on February 22, 1922 in Atkinson, North Carolina and was raised on the family farm near Faison in Sampson County. He was the valedictorian of the Piney Grove High School Class of 1939.

Enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in October 1939, he attended Sea School in Norfolk, Virginia and was assigned to the Marine Detachment aboard the USS Wasp. He was later assigned to the First Provisional Marine Brigade supporting the defense of Iceland.

He was commissioned an Officer of Marines in July of 1944 and served in the Solomon Islands at Pavuvu and Banika during World War II. As a First Lieutenant, Corbett was officer-in-charge of the recruiting district encompassing eastern North Carolina. During the Korean War, Corbett commanded an infantry company in the Third Battalion, First Marine Regiment and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action during operations in vicinity of the "Punchbowl" (Hill 751), September 1951.

Other career highlights included duty with Fifth Marine Regiment, Camp Pendleton, California and Third Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan; command of the Second Marine Regiment, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; and a tour in South Vietnam as the Senior Advisor to the Vietnamese Marine Corps.

He enjoyed a second career in commercial property management and consulting before retiring in 1990.

Colonel Corbett was a graduate of the University of Maryland, George Washington University, and the Naval War College. He was an adjunct faculty member of the University of Maryland and Georgetown University.

Colonel Corbett was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Margaret Della Corbett; a daughter, Judith Claire Corbett; his parents, Leon Vance and Martha Ezzie Wilson Corbett; brothers Norman, Billy, and J.D.; and sisters Mildred and Wilma.

Captain Timothy Overturf, Chaplain Corps, United States Navy, Second Marine Division Chaplain, will conduct a memorial service on Friday, February 28 at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, North Carolina. Visitation will be held one hour before the service.

The family would like to express appreciation to the staff of the Oaks at Mayview for their attentive and compassionate care of Colonel Corbett during the past four months.
