Mr. Don Martin , 81, of Charlotte died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at the Harris Hospice Unit of Presbyterian Hospital. Mr. Martin was born in Malvern, Iowa, the son of the late Otis R. and Eva Griffey Martin . As a child, Don moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he was educated. He attended Washington University in St. Louis. Mr. Martin was an Army photographer during WWII and for a time was a staff photographer in Camp Butner, NC. In 1945, he moved to Charlotte and joined Tom Franklin Studio, which served as the photographic staff of The Charlotte News, then, the city's afternoon newspaper. As senior photographer of The Charlotte News, his career extended from the days of the cumbersome Speed Graphic, flash bulbs, and tripods to the 35mm cameras of the present. Among thousands of assignments during his 35-year career, Don photographed every President from Truman to Reagan. Various awards for his work were capped in 1966 by he J.C. Penney Award for newspaper photography, a national competition. He was a life member of the United States Power Squadron and had served on its executive committee. He was a past president of the N.C. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth (Libby); niece, Sally Squire of Houston, TX; and a number of cousins in Missouri. The family wishes to thank Dr. James Boyd, his staff and the staff of Harris Hospice for their care and kindness. The family will receive friends 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, April 2, 1999, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Onxley, 3922 Sulkirk Road. Interment will be in Forest Park-Lawndale Cemetery in Houston, TX.
