John was born April 29, 1929, in Globe, Ariz., a son of the late Alexander and Anna (Maas) Hillmer. He attended school in the Sturgeon Bay area, graduating from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1948. Following high school, John sailed the Great Lakes as a fireman/oiler on the Steinbrenner and Phillip Mench with Great Lakes Steamship Co. He then furthered his education, receiving his degree in agriculture from UW-Platteville in 1954. John served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from March of 1954 to December of 1955. John moved to Two Rivers in 1958 and in 1964 established Lindsay Soft Water of Northeastern Wisconsin. The company is now known as Bay Lakes EcoWater Systems and is celebrating it's 50th year in business.
On May 29, 1963, John married Lois Kautzer at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Two Rivers. John and Lois celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 29, 2013.
Survivors include his wife: Lois Hillmer, Two Rivers; son and daughter-in-law: Dan and Jena Hillmer, and their sons, Ethan, Seth, Aaron and Colin, Manitowoc; daughter and son-in-law: Ann and Robert Landt, Manitowoc. He is further survived by two sisters: Ruth (Herbert) Armstrong and Joan Dunn; a sister-in-law: Sandy Hillmer, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother: Robert Hillmer.
Private graveside services will be held at Grace Lutheran Church Cemetery, Valders.
