On September 4, 1920, Bertha was born in Galion, Ohio, the third of nine children of the late Willis and Eldora (Hershner) Amick.
Shortly after attending school, Bertha married Harry William Arnold Sr., better known as "Big Harry", on May 13, 1938, in Greenup, Kentucky. They shared nearly 46 years of marriage and lovingly raised three children. He preceded her in death on May 4, 1984.
A loving homemaker, Bertha always made sure Big Harry and her children were well-cared for, and there wasn't anything at home she couldn't do. She was an excellent cook, and a very capable seamstress, making her children's clothes, prom dresses and much much more. She also helped both Big Harry and Little Harry with their trucking businesses, any way she could.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and of the Rebecca's.
Snowbirds, Bertha and Big Harry enjoyed spending their winters in Fort Myers, Florida, as far back as the early 1960's.
First and foremost to Bertha was her family, and most especially her grandchildren. She loved to watch over her grandchildren and spoil them every chance she got.
She will be missed by her three children: Harry (Rose) Arnold of Mount Gilead, Jane (Robert) Riggs of Titusville, Florida, and Patsy (Al) Gildersleeve of Mount Gilead; 9 grandchildren: Carol Jo (Jamie) Nelson, Bill (Tressa) Arnold, Janelle (Brent) Rudolph, Cathy Carroll, Tim (Asa) Riggs, Stephen (Jan) Riggs, Gary Riggs, Laura (Bob) Fabian, and Cindy (Michael) Damshroder; 8 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren; a step-daughter, Helen Young; two step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including her husband and parents, Bertha was preceded in death by all six brothers and two sisters; a granddaughter, Vicky Riggs; a step-daughter, Betty Jo Goff; 5 step-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson.
Her family will greet friends from 10 – 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main Street, Mount Gilead. Services honoring her life will follow at 11:00 a.m., with Hospice Chaplain Dave Matos officiating. Burial will follow in Rivercliff Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Morrow County, 228 South Street, Mount Gilead, Ohio, 43338.
