The Jackson County Federal, July 20, 1887:
Obituary. Mr. William Fairley was born near Glasgow, Scotland, November 20th, 1837. At the age of 16 he went to Glasgow and took a position as clerk in a store. Here he became converted and joined Dr. John Eadie's church, (U.P.) Went to Manchester, 1861, Was married there to Elizabeth Dunn in 1865, and soon afterwards came to New York. For 17 years he was in the office of A. T. Stewart & Co., and after they gave up business he came west in search of health and business location. Has been in Holton since the fall of 1882 .... Mr. Fairley died at his home in Holton, Monday, July 18, 1887 ...

The Holton Weekly Recorder, July 21, 1887:
We are pained to record the death of Mr. Wm. Fairley, one of our prominent business men and leading citizens. His death occurred Monday, and he was buried yesterday. A large number of our citizens attended the funeral services, which were conducted by Rev. Havens at the family residence ... Mr. Fairley was born near Glasgow, Scotland, in the year 1837. When a young man he engaged in the mercantile business in Glasgow, removed from there to Manchester, England, and in 1865, to New York, where he was engaged in the great dry goods house of A. T. Stewart, for seventeen years. In 1882 he came to Holton and, in company with Alex. Dunn, jr., established what is known throughout the county as the New York store. A year or two ago his health became so shattered that he had to give up active business although he remained a member of the firm. Gradually his health became worse, until for the last few months he has been confined to his room .... He leaves a family of a wife, two sons and two daughters....
