World War Veteran Goes to His Rest

Funeral Services For Native Son Of Hamilton County Held Here Last Sunday

Born, reared and educated in Hamilton County, a volunteer soldier in the World war from this county, Oscar L. Swanson was brought back from the state of Arizona for burial in the soil of Hamilton County. His death occurred at Tucson, Arizona, on Wednesday of last week after a battle for life that lasted over a period of four years. In that time he had been a patient in government hospitals in Colorado and in the south, his death occurring at a sanatorium in Tucson. He volunteered at the very outset of America's connection with the great war and came from France suffering from injuries caused by being gassed. This eventually developed into tuberculosis, from which he could not recover.

The body was brought back and taken to the Yost and Vogt funeral home, where on Sunday afternoon the funeral services were held, with a large assembly of relatives and sorrowing friends present. The service was conducted by Rev. Rollings of Aurora, assisted by Rev. Palmberg. The military escort and pall bearers were of the American Legion many of them former comrades of the deceased when he was a member of old Company H. Full military honors were given. The deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Swanson. The following obituary was read:

Oscar Levi Swanson was born at Aurora Nebraska, May 23, 1895 and died at Tucson, Arizona on June 17th 1931 at the age of 36 years and 25 days. He was married to Miss Nancy Sullivan of Colorado Springs in 1929. During his last illness he lived in his own home with the nurse and doctor in daily attendance and his wife and mother-in-law doing everything possible for his comfort. Owing to a delay of over a half day in the delivery of the telegram, his brother Emil of Turlock, California, did not arrive before he passed away. Oscar was confirmed to the Siloa Swedish church with the class of 1915, with Rev. N. A. Bloomstrand as the pastor.

During his illness, Oscar renewed his belief in Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and found much comfort in repeating the Scripture he had memorized, when he was too sick to read from the Bible.

Besides his wife and parents he is survived by five sisters and two brothers, Adena Swanson, Mrs. Ed. Palmberg and Mrs. Harry Hanson of Aurora, Clara Swanson of Lincoln, Mrs. Lloyd Schertz of Los Angeles, Joseph Swanson of Aurora and Emil Swanson of Turlock, California. All of them, except Mr. Schertz, were present at the funeral.

Mr. Swanson was one of the volunteers of Company H., recruited in Aurora. He went to Camp Cody with the company, later being transferred, reaching France and seeing active service. A gas attack left his lungs impaired, finally resulting in the illness which caused his death.

After the war, Mr. Swanson lived in the west most of the time. He was in Casper, Wyoming, for several years, and there he was severely burned by hot oil while employed by one, of the companies there.

For the past four years he has been ill. He was in government hospitals in New Mexico and Arizona for several years. His lungs nearly gone, he fought off the ravages of tuberculosis two years after doctors despaired of his life.
