Sarah Adams, Popular Former Teacher, Dies
Miss Sarah "Sally" Adams, venerated local retired school-teacher, died last evening at the Jackson Nursing Home, where she had been a resident. She was in her 94th year.
A veteran of 51 years of teaching in public schools of Washington County, until her retirement in 1939, "Miss Sally"--as she was affectionately known to several local generations--graduated from high school in 1887. That was the year that the "new" Broadway School for Girls opened, but Miss Sally was one three girls who elected to finish out the year at the old Academy, being the last girls to study there before it became the Hagerstown Male High School. The combined graduating class of the two schools in 1887, however, numbered only 18 students.
The daughter of a newspaper publisher, Sally Adams started her teaching career shortly after her high school graduation. She taught fifth grade at Antietam, and later at Broadway, until 1913, when she was transferred to the high school. After teaching French and history there for a number of years, in 1924 she took a leave of absence to enroll at Western Maryland College, where she was to study for three years and receive her A.B. degree. She previously had done undergraduate work at Kee Mar College and Frederick Seminary.
Before returning to high school here and a new post as librarian, Miss Sally worked several summers as librarian at a school in Vermont, studied at Johns Hopkins and spent three months touring Europe with friends. Her service as librarian at Hagerstown High from 1927 to 1939 was distinguished, winning the school's library recognition as one of the best in the state. In the dozen years which she presided over it, the library's collection grew from 500 books to 5.000.
Since her retirement, Miss Sally's popularity has been undimmed. Every year she has received new waves of visits from former students, many of whom now live in every part of the nation.
