James Milton Townsend, a son of Francis Asbury Townsend and the former Miss Parthenia Elizabeth Cooper, was born in the bounds of Ninety-Six, South Carolina on the 18th of October 1865. His father was a school teacher before the war and served in Co. G. 7th Regiment South Carolina Volunteers.

Known as Milton, he married Miss Caroline Eliza "Carrie" Burnett on December 16th 1884. This union was blessed with the following known children:
Ethel (1886 – 1907)
Jane Elizabeth (1888 – 1968)
Henry Sloan (1890 – 1935)
James Maxie (1892 – 1944)
Pearl Vivian (1894 – 1985)
