He attended Virginia Military Institute his freshman year before enlisting in the Army in 1944. Following his graduation from Officer Candidate School in early 1945, he spent the next four years on active duty in Germany and Austria. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Law Degrees from the University of Arkansas after returning to the States. He retired from Stephens Production Company in 1997. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Van Buren. An accomplished runner, James was a member of the 1949 Arkansas Razorbacks Cross Country team, and he was a fixture at Arkansas and Oklahoma road races from the late 1970's through the mid 1990's.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joy Lynne; a daughter, Leigh Ann Mullins of Fort Smith; two sons, John Mullins and wife Sonya of Fort Smith and Andy Mullins of Yorktown, Virginia; and grandchildren Erin Mullins, David Mullins and Jenna Mullins.
Funeral service will be Monday, March 17, 2014 at 1:00 PM in the Trinity Episcopal Church in Van Buren under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home. Burial will be private in the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be David Mullins, Rick Jackson, John Mullins and Andy Mullins.
The family will greet friends at Edwards Funeral Home on Sunday from 1-3 PM.
