The death of Matthias Anderson left his apparently pregnant widow, Hannah (Sherwood) Anderson, alone with the care of their six minor children. Probate for Matthais Anderson was conducted in Stamford although he died in Greenwich. At this time, probate records were kept at the district level, rather than at the county level. Districts covered one or more towns (townships), sometimes overlapping county lines.
