His early life was spent in his native village with his parents, John a weaver from Scotland and Catherine MacDonald and his 6 brothers and three sisters. Here he was converted and baptized about nineteen years of age. Soon he heard the voice of God calling him to preach the Gospel. After his graduation from Woodstock College he was ordained in Mount Forest, Ontario.

On May 5th, 1869 he and Anna Gillies were united in marriage. They lived happily together more than 50 years, when the Lord called her to his reward. Four children gladdened their home, John S., Alice Mary, Martha Angelina & James Fyfe (who died at 4 years). The others all live in Detroit, Mich., highly respected and useful Christians.

Bro. Calder faithfully served several churches as pastor both in Ontario (Mount Forest, Highgate, Alvinston, Ailsa Craig, St. Marys) & Michigan (Sault Ste. Marie & Detroit). He was an ardent worker in the cause of temperance. By his brother ministers he was held in high esteem.
