Attorney.
His death certificate listed his mother's maiden name (incorrectly) as Townes(informant, his daughter Elizabeth Kulp). It seems a natural assumption that the Townes name came from his mother.
But his parents were William Thomas Wynn and Judith Maria Jones who died when William Townes Wynn(e) was a young man and his own children never knew them. Goodspeed's 1891 biography of William Thomas Wynn stated that his wife Judith M. Jones was the daughter of William S. Jones.
Yalobusha County, Miss. Marriage Records:
Wynn, W.T. to Jones, Judith M.
Mar 22, 1866.
William Townes Wynn(e) was in his early 20s when his parents died. He moved to Charleston, in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, and became a junior partner of his uncle Robert E. Wynne -- and spelled his name like him (Wynne).
