Retired United States Navy Chief Petty Officer, Garland D. Skaggs, age 80, husband of the late Geraldine (Gerry) Skaggs, died February 18, 2014.
Garland was born in Crix, Kentucky, on September 3, 1933, the son of J. Earl and Julia (Cox) Scaggs. Later the family moved to South Solon, Ohio, where he grew up and attended school. Garland joined the Navy at the age of 17 and proudly served our nation for 22 years as a diver and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) expert. He was a member of the Naval EOD Association and Masonic Fielding Lodge No. 192 F&AM. In 1987 he moved to Crestview where he enjoyed family, working in his wood shop, hunting, fishing and riding horses.
Garland is survived by his three daughters; Eleanor Owens (Joel) of Longwood, FL, Norma Jean Martin and Patricia Van Liere, both of Crestview, FL; and one son, William Skaggs of Holt, FL; twelve grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Borghese, Powell, Ohio, Connie Hunter, New Castle, Indiana; and one brother, Ronnie Scaggs, Springfield, OH; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Terry Skaggs, Muncie, IN, and his brother, John Scaggs, Springfield, OH.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 2:00 P.M., at the residence of Pastor Henry Myrick, 530 Camellia Ave., Holt, FL 32564. Pastor Myrick will officiate.
