Cunningham Rites Today
Funeral services will be held at 3 pm today for Mrs. William H. Cunningham Sr. of Opelousas, who taught for many years in the St. Landry Parish public school system before her retirement. She was 71. Rites will be in St. Landry Catholic Church with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Washington, Louisiana under the direction of Lafond & Son Funeral Home of Opelousas.
Mrs. Cunningham died Friday at 6:10 pm in the Opelousas General Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born in Opelousas, Mrs Cunningham finished high school in Washington, Louisiana. Her first year of teaching was on Bayou Teche where she taught French speaking children, not one of them could speak English.
She graduated from Southwestern Louisiana Institute in 1922. There were only 22 students in her class. Following her graduation she taught at Opelousas Elementary School on Market Street for approximately 15 years. She retired after teaching in Melville for about two years.
She is survived by her husband, William H. Cunningham of Opelousas; two sons, W.H. Cunningham Jr. Of Rockaway N>J., and John P. Cunningham of Houston. Her daughter Mary Virginia Bordelon proceeded her in death, She is survived by five brothers, W.W. St.Cyr of New Orleans, Leo St.Cyr of Donaldsonville, Jack St.Cyr of Metairie, Robert St.Cyr of Opelousas and Richard St.Cyr of Lake Charles and one sister Josie St.Cyr of Opelousas, she has four grandchildren.
Her head stone says Vergie Cunningham on it. Her given name was Virginia Corrine St.Cyr
