Eugene "Gene" Bell, age 85, of Quitman, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Southridge Nursing and Rehab Center in Heber Springs. Born in Judsonia on September 5, 1928, he was the son of the late Charles Franklin Bell and Mary Cordella Roberts Bell.
Mr. Bell grew-up on a farm in Clay County with his parents, two older brothers, Roy and Herbert, and his twin, Ermald, where the boys passed their time playing music together.
He was a retired construction superintendent and project manager. In 1962, Mr. Bell and his family moved to Cleburne County, and he was instrumental in the initial building of Eden Isle and the Red Apple Inn.
He proudly served our country during the Korean War and was a veteran of the United States Army.
Mr. Bell was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a 32 Degree Mason, and a Master Mason. He was very active in his church and served for over 25 years as a deacon at Palestine Baptist Church in Pearson. He also served on the Pearson Cemetery Committee.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Bell was preceded in death by one son, Randal Bell, and three brothers, Roy Bell, Herbert Bell, and Ermald Bell.
He is survived by
his wife, Doris Catt Bell of Quitman;
three sons, Franklin Bell of Conway,
Johnny Bell and wife, Susie, of Greenbrier,
and Ronny Bell and wife, Sharon, of Grovetown, Georgia;
one daughter, Susan Setzler and husband, Jesse, of Conway;
five grandchildren, Summer Calhoun, Jeremy Bell, Lisa Hickey, Chase Hickey, and Clay Hickey;
and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Bell is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, March 16, in the Olmstead Chapel beginning at 1:00 p.m. with funeral services following at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. John Cates, and Rev. Duaine Blackmore. Interment will follow in Cleburne County Memorial Gardens. Bobby Dodd, Edward Bell, Larry Catt, Jr., Gary Bittle, Terry Bell, and Chad Cruce will serve as pallbearers
