Graduated from Yale in 1842 and studied law at Harvard in 1832 and 1843. He became an attorney in 1845 and would practice for forty five years in the city. He was a co-founder of the New York Bar Association. He first married Louise Mott Strong who died in 1857. He became a writer later in life and wrote under the pen name of Paul Siegvolk. One of his most famous works was "Walter Ashwood, a Love Story".
