He was born before 28 March 1671 (date christened) at Schwaigern, Heilbronn, Duchy of Wurttemberg, Holy Roman Empire (German) (now Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany), the son of Georg Baumgartner and Anna Veyhel Baumgartner. He died there 27 June 1721, and was buried in the churchyard of (known then as) St. Anne & St. John the Baptizer Church in Schwaigern. On 23 January 1700 at Schwaigern, he married Anna Katharina Willheit, daughter of Johann Michael and Anna Maria (Rufflin) Willheit. Jacob and Katharina were parents of seven known children: Hans Martin, Hans Jacob, Johann Frederick, Johann Michael (died at 13 days), Anna Katharina, Eva Dorothea (died about 2 years), and Gottfried. Two sons, Frederick and Gottfried came to America. (Children believed to be in order of birth.)
