Shirley Owens Baker, beloved wife of Jack Baker for 48 years, passed away March 11, 2014, at their home in Hubert, N.C.
She was the youngest of four children, born to Lewis and Alvina Owens of Baltimore, Md. She had one brother, Roger Owens, and two sisters, Joan Kelly and Alice Fisher Conner.
She is survived by her brother; her sister Joan; her husband; her children, David Baker and Cheryl Goodson; her grandsons, Justin and Jason Goodson; and her granddaughter, Ariel Baker.
She was also aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was born in Baltimore and moved to Pompano Beach, Fla. with her family in 1958. She graduated from Pompano Beach High School and became an employee of Chris Craft until her wedding with Jack Baker, a U.S. Marine recruiter in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. in 1965.
She was a Marine wife until his retirement from the Corps in 1979. They retired in the Camp Lejeune area and later relocated to a home they built in nearby Hubert. Shirley was a talented craftswoman, seamstress and crochet artist, and worked on many items that were later donated to churches in N.C. and Md. She won many blue ribbons and awards for her handiwork at events such as the Onslow County Fair. She was an avid bowler who participated in many tournaments and was a member of a league in Jacksonville. She adored her monthly gatherings with friends to play Bunco and she was an active member of several book clubs. Shirley and Jack were insurance agents and the co-owners of Marine Insurance Agency in Jacksonville for 27 years until their retirement in 2013.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. today, March 15, 2014, at Trinity United Methodist Church with visitation to take place 30 minutes prior to the service.
