Charles Alling served as a pilot with the 34th Bomb Group in the 8th Air Force in WWII. Based in Mendlesham, East Anglia, he flew 27 combat missions over Europe - 19 as a lead pilot - and two mercy missions, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters.
Charles Alling graduated in 1947 from Yale University, where he earned a Major "Y." A Management Consultant, he was a Partner and Senior Director of SpencerStuart, an Executive Search firm. In 1988, he retired to study Ethics at Oxford University and in 1989 founded the Alling Institute or Ethics. Charles Alling served on the several boards in Maine, including Maine Businesses for Social Responsibility, and the Board of Visitors of the Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama.
He is survived by his wife, Gail McMaster Alling; daughters Charlotte Alling, Elizabeth Alling Hildt, and Abigail Alling; grandchildren Abigail Alling, Christopher Cooke, and Charles Hildt; and sister Elizabeth Atwood.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, December 23 at The Boulders, Riverwoods, Exeter, New Hampshire, followed this summer by a celebration of his life at St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Kennebunk, Maine.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution in his memory may be made to St. Ann's Episcopal Church, Box 44, Kennebunkport, Maine 04046 or Yale University, Office of Development, 157 Church Street, New Haven, Connecticut 06510-2100.
