Kenneth Alvin Staten: Tragic ending -- Tears streamed down Kevin Staten's face just hours after he learned Monday afternoon that his father, who had been reported missing, was found dead minutes from the family's Olive Branch home. Kenneth Alvin Staten, 71, wandered away from his home in the 7000 block of Bluegrass Drive in the Eastover subdivision near Goodman Road and U.S. 78 around midnight Monday. Staten, who had dementia, was immediately reported missing by his wife after she woke up and realized he was gone. Olive Branch police and several other agencies conducted a search for him throughout the day Monday. At 2:44 p.m., a man walking his dog spotted the body in a ditch near the city water tower at Craft Road and U.S. 78, a 10-minute drive from Staten's home. He was pronounced dead at the scene. "What are we going to do now that my dad is gone?" asked a distraught Kevin Staten in the front yard of the family's brick home. "He was a good man. A Christian man." Kenneth Staten moved from Memphis to Olive Branch several years ago after he retired from Carrier and Kimberly-Clark, his son said. "My mom is blind, and he would drive her around and help out as much as he could," Kevin Staten said. "They have been married 50 years." He added, "We are all in pain because my uncle who lives in Memphis died Sunday night. I've lost my uncle and now my dad." Olive Branch Police Chief Don Gammage said authorities did not suspect foul play. He said it appeared Kenneth Staten died from exposure to the cold weather after he wandered away from home wearing just a sweatshirt, sweatpants and socks. But the medical examiner's office in Jackson will determine his cause of death, Gammage said. (Published in The Commercial Appeal, DeSoto Edition, March 18, 2014)
Additional information provided by David Roth: Kenneth Staten is buried in the family plot at Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis, TN.
