Funeral services for Hans B. Westby, 81, of Maddock were conducted on Saturday, May 6th 1961 at 2:00 p. m. from the North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock with Pastor F. E. Olderr officiating. Interment was in the North Viking Cemetery. Mr. Westby died on 2 May 1961 at a Jamestown Hospital where he had been a patient for a short time. Mrs. Jens Dyrud was soloist accompanied by Miss Gilma Hovland, organist. Pallbearers were: Leonard Melaas, Burton Melaas, Leo Spriggs, Sr., Roy Spriggs, Erlen Spriggs and Mr. Westby. Hans Westby was born on 23 Jan 1880 in Ridgeway, IA one of thirteen children in the family of Ole and Maren Westby. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Orleans Church, IA. His father Ole Westby moved with his family to Maddock in March of 1902 and bought a farm just south of Maddock. On 24 Nov 1907 Hans was united in marriage to Bergliot Christianson of Oslo, Norway. They lived on their homestead near Makoti until October of 1909 when they moved to their present home south of Maddock. He farmed there until the later years. Mr. Westby was an active member of the North Viking Lutheran Church since moving to this community. He was among those who helped to lay the foundation for the building of the church. Later he served as trustee which at that time included tasks much different than those of today. One of the less heard of jobs was to go from farm to farm to obtain donations of oats for the pastor's team of horses. Besides his wife he leaves four sons: Orville Westby or Boring, OR, Harlan Westby of Bothell, WA, Lloyd Westby of Sheyenne, and Ralph Westby of Maddock; three daughters: Muriel Mrs. Alf Wisness of Maddock, Doris Mrs. Carroll Tollefson of Everett, WA and Carol Mrs. Eldo Kanikkeberg of Seattle, WA. Also 18 grand children and 8 great grand children survive. Four sisters: Mrs. Charlotte Spriggs of Sioux Falls, SD, Mrs. Helga Werham of Ingleside, IL, Mrs. Mathilda Melaas of Maddock, and Mrs. Thora Hageman of Bothell, WA and three brothers: George Westby of Thief River Falls, MN, Bennie Westby of Walla Walla, WA and Lloyd Westby of Littleton, CO. Three brothers and two sisters and his parents preceded him in death. The Burke-Utgaard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
