P. G. Gasaway Dictated Story of His Life

Three months before his death, P.G. Gasaway, Pioneer resident of Saline County and father of Coroner Lon Gasaway of Williamson County, called his son to his bedside and asked him to write a letter regarding his life which could be printed after his death. Mr. Gasaway died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Swafford, 105 South Gray Street on Monday morning, September 6 and on September 7 interment was made on Old Brushy Cemetery in Saline County. His letter follows:

Galatia, Illinois, R. F. D. 2, June 3, 1933

'I can't write, and I am calling on my son, Lou Gasaway to write for me. I want to say a few words about my parents, Louis and Rhoda Gasaway. My mother's maiden name was Abney. They were married sometime in the year 1825. To this union 10 children were born, Milly, Jane, John, Christine, William, Eliza, Elizabeth, Bob, Peter and Pauline. Time back there were different from now. They had to make all the clothes they wore, and my father made all the shoes for his family and had to go to Carbondale or Shawneetown to get the leather. One pair of shoes was all we children got a year.'

'I stayed home with my father and mother until I was married, that was June 16, 1869, to Evaline Morris. Squire Hyram Boatright married us. We then moved to ourselves in Brushy township, and rented a little place the first year. We went to work, both of us, and enjoyed life and saw many happy days as we lived together. Nine children were born to this union. Two, Harvey and Milo died at a young age. Tommy lived for 26 years and died. The other children still live at the present time. They are Mrs. Hardine Swafford living at Marion; Leonard Gasaway, living east of Harco about one mile and a half in Saline County, Lon Gasaway, Marion; John Gasaway, Carterville; Kirk Gasaway, in the old home settlement in Saline County and Charley Gasaway of Brushy Township, in old home settlement. My wife and I lived together about 54 years, five months and 25 days.'

'I will now change to another subject.'

'There came a time in my life, back in 1884 when I was troubled and under a heavy burden, and I couldn't get rid of it only at times. The good Lord gave me relief and caused me to praise him at that time, and made me so happy for He had saved me and began leading me in a new life in Jesus Christ . I have tried to live that way ever since. My wife was a member of the church and was baptized in July 1876, by old Brother Thomas Spain. Later, about 5 years, I joined the Old Brushy Baptist Church at Brushy Fork, that was in 1889. Elder Joe Harris baptized me in Brushy Creek south of the church. That was the first Sunday in July, 1889. We made a big church, all in peace and fellowship. My wife and I always enjoyed the Christian life and we went to the sister churches. We would visit Old Rough Church in Saline County and Little Spring Church, Hamilton County, Bethel Creek Church, East Raleigh, Wolf Creek, west of Eldorado, Cotton Grove, east of Harrisburg, and we attended all associations. We also attended the Old Bethlehem Church in Williamson County, back in 1889.'

'I have never forgotten my good old, kind mother. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. At this time I want to call in my nephews and nieces, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and I want to tell them all goodbye. Furthermore, I want to tell all my friends goodbye, (or we will all be together again some sweet day in that house, not made by hands, eternal in Heaven.'

'I still own my little home down in Saline County, Brushy Township. I am taking my wife's picture with me to the grave. I have had this picture ever since before we were married, and I want it pinned on my breast, for I am going where she is. P. G. Gasaway'
