Barbara Schley Dingwall Caruthers

Barbara Anne Caruthers departed this life March 16, 2014, at North Central Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Born June 26, 1925, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Herbert Allen and Martha Dawson (nee McMillen) Schley, Barbara grew up near Lake Michigan and attended both Downer Seminary and Juneau High School in Milwaukee. There she met her first husband, "Ding" —Ronald Alexander Dingwall—shortly before the outbreak of World War II. Following graduation, Ding joined the Army Air Corps and was trained as a bomber navigator. The couple were married before Ding was assigned to Guam for the duration of the war.

Two children were born to this union: Ronald Alexander Dingwall, Jr., (Ronny) in 1944, and Patricia Anne (Tricia) in 1946. When Ding was recalled to active duty in the Air Force before the Korean War, Barbara, Ronny and Tricia moved frequently from Wisconsin to California to Texas to Alabama, as Ding was sent to various bases to receive fighter pilot training. On February 18, 1952, he was killed in the crash of his plane, leaving Barbara a very young widow with two small children to raise.

In 1954, Barbara married Lt. James Cambron Butler in Laredo, Texas. He, too, was a fighter pilot. During the Korean War, the family lived in San Antonio, then moved to Clovis, New Mexico. Barbara's wide circle of friends included many duplicate bridge players, and this activity became her life's greatest hobby. She earned the status of Life Master, and continued playing many times every week, including the week she became ill.

Through her interest in duplicate bridge, she met her third husband, Norman N. Caruthers, a native Texan. They have lived in northwest San Antonio for the last 43 years, providing a loving home for many stray cats.

In addition to her first husband Ding, Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Edith (Schley) Long, and her son Ronald Dingwall, Jr. She is survived by her beloved husband Norman Caruthers; her daughter Tricia Thompson (Jimmy) of Bozeman, Montana; 4 grandsons: Richard Toothaker (Kate) of Portland, Oregon; Ronald Alexander Dingwall III of California; William Scott Thompson (Mary) of Belgrade, Montana; and Randall Dingwall (Stephanie) of California. Her great-grandchildren include Tycho, Joshua, and Eric Toothaker of Portland; and Rachael Anne Carrington Thompson of Belgrade, Montana.
