The remains of Mrs. A.N. Smith of Storm Lake, a former resident of this vicinity, were brought overland Wednesday and funeral services were held at the home of her nephew, John Lawton, at 2:30 in the afternoon with Rev. G.A. Patterson, pastor of the Baptist church, in charge. Old time neighbors of this vicinity acted as pall bearers. Funeral services were also held at 9:45 Wednesday morning at the Hughes Funeral Home in Storm Lake with Rev. Edward Gibson, her pastor, in charge. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.
Hannah Lawton was born Aug. 12, 1871, near Hanover, Ill., and passed away June 29, 1930, at the age of 58 years, 10 months and 17 days. She grew to young womanhood at Hanover where on Dec. 28, 1893, she was united in marriage with Albert N. Smith. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Albert Lea, Minn., where they resided but a short time. About 1896 they came to this vicinity and located on a farm southeast of Hawarden in the neighborhood of her brothers, the last John and Byron Lawton. They resided in this vicinity until 1910 when they moved to Oakes, N.D., and ten years ago they moved to Storm Lake. She was a member of the Lakeside Presbyterian church in Storm Lake and was an active worker until the time of her illness three and one-half years ago. She was the mother of two children, Roland L. Smith and Mrs. Viola A. Lovejoy, who with her husband survive her. She also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Wm. Jewell and Miss Alice Lawton of Elizabeth, Ill., and Mrs. W.O. Rutherford of Marshalltown, Iowa, and three grandchildren, Dorothy Jean Lovejoy, and Albert and Sylvia Smith. She was a kind and loving mother and will be greatly missed in her home.
Those who accompanied the remains from Storm Lake were her husband, A.N. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Roland L. Smith and two children, Mrs. Viola A. Lovejoy and daughter and Mrs. Floyd Davis of Storm Lake; Mrs. William Jewell and Miss Alice Lawton of Elizabeth, Ill.; Mrs. W.O. Rutherford of Marshalltow, Iowa, and Mrs. C.A. Smith of Winnegago, Minn. Dan Gamble and Wm. Simpson of Ireton also attended the funeral.
