Robert Augustine Bond, 77, died in the early hours of November 16, 2005, at Meadville Medical Center, Meadville, PA. Born in Ketchikan, Alaska, in 1928, he was raised in the Yakima Valley of central Washington and was a member of the Yakima Nation. He married Bronwell Berg, and as an accomplished musician he graduated from Linfield College and obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Eastman School. As a professional clarinetist he served during the Korean War at Fort Ord, CA, as a member of the Army band that gave weekly radio concerts nationwide. Upon discharge he moved to Charlotte, NC, where he was a member of the Charlotte Opera, Symphony, Symphonette and Oratorio orchestras, and was a recitalist. Subsequently he joined the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra in St. Paul, MN, and also performed in chamber concerts and with the Minneapolis Civic Symphony. His forty-three career of teaching began at Macalester College in the Twin Cities. Subsequently he taught at Beloit College and Milton College in southern Wisconsin, where he continued his active life as a musician. He performed in the Beloit Symphony, the New Arts Woodwind Quintet, and the Choral Union of Milton, WI. In 1981 he came to Meadville as Chairman of the Music Department and head of the Allegheny Summer Music Festival. In these capacities he became music director and conductor, as well as performing on faculty recitals. He has recently been Professor Emeritus, teaching his favorite course of musical theory, post tonal music, as well as clarinet, saxophone, and coaching woodwind ensembles. Robert is survived by his wife, Bronwell; 2 children, Brenna and Sean; son-in-law, Joseph Heffernan; as well as 2 grandchildren, Marie and Torin Heffernan.
