Mary Stacher Matejov and her twin sister, Margaret, were born on April 2, 1925 in Alameda, California. Their father, Fritz Stacher came from Switzerland and their mother, Josephine from Holland. Fritz Stacher was a Merchant Mariner. She married Stephen Matejov, USMA Class of 1946. They were the parents of 10 children. The first five were born on military bases in Japan, California, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Germany. The next five were born in the state of New York, the home state of their father. She was a member of St. Raphael's Parish of East Meadow, New York and a member of the Rosary Society. In 1973, their son, Joseph, was shot down over Laos at the end of the Vietnam War. She and her husband joined the League of Families of POWs and MIAs. They spoke at many public events, were interviewed for many news articles and appeared on television shows. In 1985, she moved to Virginia. She passed away at the age of 84 years on Sunday morning, August 15, 2010 following a stroke in Woodbridge, Virginia. Survivors included nine children, five daughters of Santa Ana, California; Lititz, Pennsylvania; Portland, Oregon; Woodbridge, Virginia; Lake Forest, California and four sons of San Diego, California; Story, Wyoming; Pollock Pines, California and Aliso Viejo, California; 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and her twin sister of Queenstown, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National League of Families of POWs and MIAs. Services were August 30, 2010 at West Point. Interment was at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
